Changing Trends in Research
It's no secret that getting research coverage is nearly impossible for many firms. The
analyst communities have shrunk and, as a result, many companies have lost their coverage
and others have never been covered at all. Paid independent coverage has been an alternative
that some companies have employed but the controversy over "true" independence continues. Last
June, the NASDAQ entered into the picture with another model, establishing itself as an
intermediary between researchers and companies in an effort to increase access to research. But
the controversy continues.
So what's a company looking for coverage to do? What do portfolio managers
really think and who do they really trust for insight into a company?

After a long and distinguished career on both the "sell side" and "buy side,"
Marc Robins is perhaps best known as the founder of "The Red Chip Review," a nationally recognized
small cap analytical research firm. The firm, founded in 1993, launched Robins as a sought after
expert on small-cap stocks. He was a regularly featured columnist in Forbes, Bloomberg: Personal,
and the AAII Journal as well as other national business and investment publications.
Also in 1993, Robins co-founded Crown Point Group, Ltd, a valuation and
investment consulting operation focused also on expert testimony. As part of this Company's
growth, CPG founded Crown Point Securities, LLC., which is active in investment banking capital
raising. Beginning in the fall of 2002, he then assembled a team and established The Robins
Group, an institutional broker dealer, and Catalyst Financial Resources, which works with
small publicly traded firms to enhance investor awareness in the institutional arena.
